EU Tyre Label Guide UK
Understand wet grip, fuel efficiency and noise ratings on the EU tyre label — and what to look for when fitting tyres in the UK.
What's on the EU tyre label
- Fuel efficiency (A–E) — lower rolling resistance saves fuel and helps EV range
- Wet grip (A–E) — shorter wet braking distances, critical for UK weather
- Noise (A–C and dB) — quieter tyres are more comfortable, especially in EVs
- Newer labels also show snow (3PMSF) and ice grip symbols where applicable
Suggested targets for UK driving
- Aim for A or B on wet grip given UK weather
- Aim for A, B or C on fuel efficiency for typical motorway use
- EV drivers benefit most from low rolling resistance and low noise
- Look for the 3PMSF symbol if you want all-season or winter performance
When the label isn't the full story
The EU label is a minimum standard, not a complete review. Two tyres with the same label scores can perform very differently in independent UK tests for dry braking, lateral grip, comfort and longevity. Combine the label with independent reviews and your EU tyre label scores when comparing tyres.
Frequently asked questions
Quick answers about UK tyre fitment, MOT rules and seasonal options.
Are EU tyre labels still used in the UK?
Yes. UK retailers continue to display the EU tyre label format. It rates fuel efficiency, wet grip and noise.
What does the wet grip rating mean?
Wet grip is rated A to E. A means the shortest braking distance in wet conditions, E the longest. The difference between A and E can be over 18 metres at 50 mph.
What does the fuel efficiency rating mean?
Fuel efficiency is rated A to E. A means the lowest rolling resistance and the most fuel saving. EVs benefit most because lower rolling resistance helps real-world range.
What does the noise rating mean?
Noise is shown in decibels and as A, B or C. Lower noise tyres are quieter on motorways and are especially noticeable in EVs.
Are the labels enough on their own?
They're a good starting point, but independent UK tyre tests and reviews give a fuller picture of dry grip, comfort and longevity.
