What run-flat tyres do
Run-flat tyres are designed to keep you driving for a short distance after a puncture, typically up to 50 miles at 50 mph. They have reinforced sidewalls and need to be paired with a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS) so you know when air pressure drops.
They're typically fitted from new on premium brands like BMW, Mini and some Mercedes-Benz models. Always confirm whether your specific vehicle requires run-flat tyres before changing.
Frequently asked questions
Quick answers about UK tyre fitment, MOT rules and seasonal options.
Should I fit run-flat tyres?
Only if your vehicle was designed for them. Run-flat tyres rely on a tyre pressure monitoring system and a vehicle suspension tuned for their stiffer sidewalls.
Can I replace run-flat tyres with standard tyres?
If your vehicle came fitted with run-flat tyres from new and doesn't carry a spare wheel, switching to standard tyres can leave you stranded after a puncture. Check with a qualified UK tyre fitter first.
How can I tell if my tyres are run-flat?
Common markings include RFT, RSC, ROF, SSR or DSST on the sidewall, depending on the brand. The vehicle handbook will also state if run-flats are fitted.
